Importance of Communication in HRM

Communication helps in managerial decision making by providing the right message at the right time. Effective communication, both downward and upward give feedback which enables the HRM to take timely decisions and exercise control immediately. Thus, communication facilitates control. Communication improves image. Communication in managing the human resource is very important. No HR manager can effectively perform his. function without effective communication system. The success of all human managerial function depends on the good communication. Effective communication is the foundation for sound HR management. In fact, effective. communication is indispensable for R management. No HR manager can perform his managerial functions without an effective communication system. An effective communication is important for human resource management-

1. Efficient Functioning – HR manager plans, organises, motivates, controls. Performance of these functions depends on the effective communication. HR manager motivates, guides, organises people to do their own work. Communication is an indispensable tool for the effective HR operation.

2. Facilitates Human Resource Planning- Human resource planning requires extensive communication among personnel, who converts plans into action. Objectives, policies, practices, procedures are conveyed to the concerned persons so that they may strictly follow them. In the absence of effective communication, HR planning may fail.

3. For Decision-making- Effective communication helps in communicating decisions to the persons concerned. Implementation of decision requires constant flow of communication between HR manager and employees.

4. Effective Staffing- Communication is very significant in the staffing function. Recruitment, selection, induction, training, performance appraisal etc, cannot be effectively done without the help of effective communication.

5. Industrial Democracy- In the present time employees, consumers and other stakeholders are given participation in the management. They share information, participate in discussion, consultation and decision making. In all these, effective communication plays vital role.

6. Sound Human and Industrial Relations – Robert D. Berth, says that it is impossible to have human relations without communication. Many industrial disputes take place because of communication gap between the managers and subordinates. Communication promotes mutual understanding, co-operation and goodwill. All these contribute to sound human and industrial relations. Subordinates can convey their opinions, complaints to managers.

7. Facilitates Changes – Communication facilitates changes, which is a way of life. Human resource discuss the need and scope of change. HR manager prepares members to accept change.

8. Avoids Illusion and Ignorance- In the absence of effective communication, people receive no information or incomplete information and remain ignorant of exact information. Due to it, confusion, misunderstanding and illusion creeps up in the people. Effective communication removes and avoids ignorance and misunderstanding. Thus effective communication is must.

Effective communication helps in performance appraisal. It records goals set for employees at the beginning of the performance period and appraise employee performance against the goals. Communication helps in HR audit.
