Summary of the Essay
Will Wimble is Paper No 108 of the periodical The Spectator a joint venture of Steele and Addison. This particular paper is written by Addison. Here he sketches the character of Mr. Will Wimble who was the younger brother of a baronet. Through his character Addison gives a message to the society. There are many Will Wimbles in society. They live as younger brothers in respectable families of ancient descent. They are very good gentlemen at heart, humble, cultured and talented but are busy without business wasting their talent on trifles. Such a one was Mr. Will Wimble who was extremely well versed in all the little handicrafts. He made things and presented them to others with affection But he could not take to any trade or business because it was against his family traditions. He was heir to no estate and trained for no trade. There fore, he wandered here and there, accepting hospitality of any family. It is in this way that he came to Sir Roger and stayed with him for a week. But his arrival was very interesting. First he sent a gift of fish which he himself had caught the best in that season-and also a letter written in utter humility, informing him that he would be coming to stay with him for a week. The author became curious to study this character in more detail, which he did with sympathy and understanding.
Writing as Mr. Spectator the author describe him as a man between forty and fifty action as superintendent of game fc. his elder brother. He makes a real artificial fly used by anglers to fish with. He makes angle rods and gives them freely to the whole country. He knits garters and presents them to mothers and sisters of his friends. He takes the service of Sir Roger’s servant to carry a little boy of shuttle cocks to a lady that lived about a mile off. The author listened to him with great attention how he had sprung a large cock pheasant, a game bird with a beautiful plumage, in one of the neighbouring woods. At dinner table the same fish was served, which Mr. Will Wimble had caught. He narrated how he had hooked it. He concluded his dinner table con versation with a late invention of his, for improving the quail-pipe-a pipe to lure quails to the net.
After the dinner the author went into his room and began to think of this uncommon character. He was touched with compassion when he thought. how good a heart and such busy hands as Mr. Will Wimble’s were wholly employed in trifles. He thought how great families often let their children starve like gentlemen but not train them in a trade which the considered below their dignity, this is the condition of many families in several parts of Europe. They have both pride and beggary at the same time.
At last, the author suggests that, if such youths are trained in trade and commerce, they can prosper and can become even richer than their elder brothers. A trading nation like England could provide opportunity for success to people like Mr. Will Wimble.
