Summary Of The Novel

At last, the station building was ready. Raju walked along the railway track. One day the train was coming to the town. People were excited. The station was decorated. An engine steamed in. Many of the important people of the town were there. Common people were not allowed there. Raju did not like it. He, however managed to get it. By the time the engine arrived he was there to receive it. He was so small that no one noticed his presence. Tables were laid. Refreshments were being served. Lectures were being delivered. The engine whistled. The bell rang. The guard blew his whistle, Important people present at the platform climbed into the train. Raju had half a mind to get into the train. But there were many policeman to stop him. The shop of Raju’s father had a record sale that day. Thus the opening ceremony of the Malgudi Railway Station was performed.

Raju’s father got the privilege of running a shop at the railway station. The father shifted all the articles to it from the hut-shop. The shop gave an empty look. The father sat Raju in the shop. Very soon Raju’s father was back in his seat at the hut shop. Raju was left to handle the business in the new-shop. Soon regular train services began. It was thrilling for Raju to watch the activities of the railway staff and the passengers at the station. He be came very active in the shop. He was happy to leave school and take up that business.
