Betty Williams Biography and Works.

Born on May 24, 1943 in the city of Belfast in Northern Ireland, Betty Williams is a co-recipient with Mairead Corrigan of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976 for her work as a co-founder of Community of Peace People. Community of Peace People is an organization dedicated to promoting a peaceful resolution to The Troubles in Northern Ireland.

She was working as a receptionist and raising the two children she had with Ralph Williams at the time she was conferred with the Nobel Prize. After the couple divorced, she married James Perkins in 1982, and lived with him in the United States.

She toured and lectured extensively. She heads the ‘Global Children’s Foundation’ and is also the President of the World Centre of Compassion for Children International. Williams is the Chair of Institute for Asian Democracy in Washington DC and also a distinguished visiting professor at the Nova South-eastern University.

Williams was one of the founders of the Nobel Women’s Initiative along with the Nobel Peace Laureates Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Wangari Maathi, Shirin Ebadi, Jody Williams and Rigoberta Menchu Tum.

It is the goal of the Nobel Women’s Initiative to strengthen works being done in support of women’s rights around the world.
