Summary of the Essay
The Chinese philosopher says that normally he is thoughtful but he is fond of gay company. It is his habit, of going about in a midst of a crowd. This enables him to forget the worry of duty. He never misses any opportunity in doing so. From his motive he is often seen in the center of a crowd. He is always in search of pleasure. He goes to such places and enjoys whenever goes forward. He shouts when others shout. He condemns when others condemn.
On one evening he was present in the midst of a crowd. His friend The Man-In-Black was with him. They were carefully watching the face of the people in the crowd. They wandered about praising the beauty of dresses of the people. They strolled for sometime. All of a sudden his friend stopped.
The-Man-In-Black felt uneasiness. He asked the Chinese philosopher to lock in another direction. He led him out of the public walk. He could perceive by the quickness of his pace and by his frequently looking behind that he was attempting to avoid somebody. Both of them turned to the right and then to the left. But it was all in vain. As they went faster, the other man still went faster. He gained upon them and they determined to face him.
The pursuer came to them and joined them with all the familiarity of an old acquaintance. He was Beau Tibbs. He shook his friend’s hand, Beau Tibbs began to talk with the Man-in -Black in a very familiar way.”
The Chinese philosopher was looking at him very carefully. He saw that his looks were pale, thin and sharp, He hat was placed on his hand in a very strange manner. He wrote a broad black ribbon round his neck. He wore by his side a sword with a black hilt. His stockings of silk, though newly washed, were grown yellow by long service, the peculiarity of his dress attracted the Chinese philosopher. The-Man-In-The-Black complimented Beau Tibbs on the taste of his clothes and the bloom in his countenance.
Beau Tibbs told The Man-in- The-Black that he hated flattery. He said that he had enjoyed talks in the company of great persons. But he atone said that he had no liking for their company. His talk revealed the absurdity of his character. He boasted before the Man-In-Black of taking told him that he was a happy fellow. While saying so his looks revealed infinite pity. Beau Tibbs kept on boasting for sometime. Then he left the company of the Man-In The Black and the Chinese philosopher. The Chinese philosopher came to know from his friend that the dress of Beau Tibbs is not less extraordinary that his conduct. If some one meets him this day, he will find him in rags. But in the next day he will be distinction, yet he has a scarce a coffee house acquaintance. He is poor. Everybody knows it. But he fancies his poverty concealed from every eye.
Beau Tibbs seems to be an agreeable companion because he under stands flattery. He pleases everyone with the first part of his conversation. But all are sure of its ending with a demand on their purse. His youth favours the frivolity of his conduct. In this way he earns his living.

After sometime things will change. When the age comes on he will face difficulty. The gravity is inconsistent with jesting or joking. He will find himself forsaken by all. Everybody will abandon him. In the decline of life, he will live a condemned life. He will have to hang upon some rich family whom he once despised. In this way he will live a life of contempt. It is possible that he may be employed only as a sky upon the servants or he may be simply a bugbear to terrify children into duty.
