Lata Mangeshkar Biography and Works.

Popularly known as the ‘Nightingale of India’, Lata Mangeshkar is the most versatile and popular playback singer of Hindi cinema, and was a theatre artist as well.

Born on September 28, 1929 in Indore, she started working as a theatre artist in sangeet nataks at the age of five. Being the first child of Dinanath Mangeshkar, she is the elder sister of singer Asha Bhosle.

She started learning music from her father Dinanath. Lata Mangeshkar began her career in 1942 which spanned over six and a half decades.

She sang songs in Hindi and about thirty-six other regional Indian languages and foreign languages.

After the sudden death of her father Dinanath, she decided to play small roles in various Hindi and Marathi films due to unsound financial condition of the house.

Lata got her biggest break when she was given a chance to sing the song ‘Aayega Aanewaala’ for the movie, Mahal. Her career saw a tremendous growth in the 1950s. She has worked with all the renowned music composer of her time like Shankar Jaikishan, SD Burman, Salil Chowdhury, Naushad, Hemant Kumar, etc.

She has sung songs for popular films like Lamhe, Diwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Darr, Yeh Dillagi, Dil toh Pagal Hai, etc.

She has won several awards including the Padma Bhushan, Dada Saheb Phalke Award, Padma Vibhushna for her singing. She is also been conferred with India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna.

Trivia

Lata Mangeshkar has composed music and also produced movies under the name of “Anand Ghan’. She is very fond of cooking She always sings barefoot, in studies or on the stage.
