Anna Hazare Biography and Works.

Born on June 15, 1937, Kisan Baburao Hazare, popularly known as ‘Anna Hazare is an Indian social activist and a prominent leader in the Indian Anti-corruption Movement’, 2011.

He joined the Indian Army in 1963 and served for 15 years.

From a determined soldier to a social reformer and a Right to Information crusader, Anna Hazare’s journey of four decades has been unprecedented in terms of a non-violent yet effective campaign.

Recently, Hazare launched an Anti-corruption Movement for passing a stronger Jan Lokpal (Ombudsman) Bill in the Indian Parliament.

The differences among the civil society and Team Anna over various issues including inclusion of the Prime Minister, higher judiciary and the acts of the MPs under the purview of the draft Lokpal bill led to the movement.

Anna Hazare began his indefinite strike on April 5, 2011, which ended on April 9, 2011, giving a deadline of August 15 to pass the Bill. After the government failed to meet the deadline, he began his next indefinite hunger strike on August 16, which lasted for 13 days.

Thousands gathered at the Ramlila ground during the 13-day strike to support the anti-crusader.

Anna Hazare contributed tremendously for the development of his native village, Ralegan Siddhi. He opened grain banks, promoted education and milk production as a secondary occupation.

Trivia

He was awarded the third-highest civilian award by the Government of India, the Padma Bhushan in 1992 for his efforts in establishing Ralegan Siddhi as an ideal model for others.
