Chanda Kochhar Biography and Works.

Chanda Kochhar was born on November 17, 1961 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan and was raised in Jaipur. She then moved to Mumbai, where she joined the Jai Hind College for a Bachelor of Arts degree. After graduating in 1982, she then pursued Cost Accountancy or ICWAI. Later, she acquired the Masters Degree in Management Studies from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai.

Chanda Kochhar is married to Deepak Kochhar, a wind energy entrepreneur and her Business schoolmate. The have two children – a son and a daughter.

She joined ICICI as a Management trainee after her Masters in the year, 1984. After nine years of hard work, Kochhar was appointed as a part of the core team to set up the ICICI bank.

Chanda Kochhar is currently the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD) of the ICICI bank from May 2009. She served as a Joint Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer of the ICICI Bank Ltd from October 2007 to April 2009. She was also the bank’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), official spokesperson and also heads the Corporate Centre of the ICICI Bank.

Kochhar personally was awarded the Retail Banker of Year, 2004 (Asia Pacific region) by the Asian Banker and Business Woman of the Year, 2005 by The Economic Times’.

Kochhar has also consistently figured in Fortune’s list of Most Powerful Women in Business since 2005. She is also at the top of the list of top 20 powerful women.

Trivia

Under her leadership, ICICI Bank won the Best Retail Bank in India Award in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005 and Excellence in Retail Banking Award in 2002 by the The Asian Banker.
