Ans.

The reasons for the failure of the animals’ rebellion

The animals’ rebellion had failed due to several reasons. First of all Old Major had over-idealistic and abstract ideas for the perfect society in the Animal Farm but he did not explain how it could be possible. Secondly, it had failed because Snowball could not compete with Napoleon’s cruel and selfish purpose to get power. Lastly, it had failed because other animals of the Animal Farm were either too stupid or too weak to fight against Napoleon. They were also too vain and selfish to do any significant work to their society.

According to Old Major man is responsible for the condition of animals

Old Major stated that according to his idea man is responsible for the condition of the animals which is very simple. He could discover it later. The animals could learn it in the course of time that there were some ordinary hardships of life like doing hard work, bad crops, cold winter which became an obstacle in the work of the progress of the society of the Animal Farm. Ultimately they learnt that even the pigs could act as badly as humans. In addition to this Major’s dream was related to the past like the country world in which the animals would be able to enjoy simple comforts and enough food. In this way, Old Major could not deal with the future or even with the present. He admitted that he did not know how the change would come about.

According to Old Major the Rebellion had come unexpectedly

It was the result of Old Major’s vagueness that the Rebellion had taken place unexpectedly because the animals could not get the proper opportunity to work out the real democratic system. On the other hand, the new society was free and its inhabitants were equal and it was according to the Commandments but in reality the pigs had taken over full control. It should be regarded another reason for the failure of the Rebellion. There was a wide difference between the intelligence of the pigs and other animals, so it was the cleverness of the pigs who had made their control of the society without any opposition.

Napoleon and Snowball were compared and contrasted

Napoleon was one of the natural leaders of the pigs and he was very selfish and hungry for power. Like Snowball who cared for himself. Napoleon did not waste his efforts on the social projects unlike Snowball. On the other hand, Snowball tried to organize the society but Napoleon’s only project was to train the puppies whom he had separated from their mothers. Later those puppies had grown into his fierce bodyguards with whom he had achieved power. When he had become dictator, he crushed the opposition and the enemies of those pigs who could do some good for the society. Napoleon had banished Snowball and he had killed those four pigs who had opposed him. The remaining animals were too weak and stupid to feel what Napoleon and his pigs were doing to them in the society of the Animal Farm.

The role made by Moses the Raven, the cat, and Mollie towards the revolution

There were several animals like Moses the Raven, the cat and Mollie who had done nothing to give their help for the success of the revolution. On the other hand, they had contributed to its failure. Moses the Raven tried to hinder the Rebellion by preaching to the animals that they should concentrate their hopes on the Sugar-candy Mountain where they would reach after their death, in preference to Old Major’s paradise on the earth. He had run away with Jones but returned later and he continued to preach about that Sugar-candy Mountain. He was a definite parasite, first on Jones, then on the pigs.

The second animal was the cat who was very selfish. It had shared the advantages of the new society. It had disappeared whenever there was work to be done.

The third animal was the mare, Mollie who was over vain and stupid because he regarded work for humans like slavery. She was very greedy due to her love for the badge of slavery, ribbons as well as for the lumps of sugar. She also did very little work and she had hidden herself during the Battle of the Cowshed. She had also kept her friendship with the humans of the neighbouring farms. Finally Mollie had left animal Farm on account of her vanity and some ribbons.

Conclusion

The writer George Orwell has asserted in the story of ‘Animal Farm‘ how the dream of an ideal society had failed. He added that abstract ideals were not enough to bring about a useful change in society because the facts of real life as well as the individual differences were not taken into account. It was very necessary to take care for all such things. The real and practical methods were very necessary.
