Introduction
After making a close and serious study of the story of the novel ‘Animal Farm’ we find that it is the story of the rise of the cruel and evil power of Napoleon. He himself was an evil minded man with an ambition to possess absolute power in the animal farm. To achieve his purpose, he took the help of all the pigs whom he gave special privileges like milk to drink and apples to eat. They were specially permitted to drink wine. They could enjoy comfortable position to sleep on bed which was not permitted to other animals of the farm. In return of these facilities, the pigs were faithful to him, right or wrong. Squealer was his great flatterer who always advocated his case. Napoleon had also kept some ferocious dogs which were very faithful to him out-and-out. In this way, Napoleon’s power increased by leaps and bounds and he became a dictator.
The Exit of Snowball
Though both Napoleon and snowball had jointly expelled Mr. Jones out of the animal farm by means of a common revolt by all the animals of that farm. In this way, the animals of that farm became free from the slavery of Mrs. Jones. They also appointed Napoleon and Snowball as their two great leaders. Seven commandments were also framed for democratic rights of the animals. They were,
1. One moving on two legs is an animal.
2. One moving on four legs is a friend.
3. No animal shall put on clothes.
4. No animal shall sleep on a bed.
5. No animal shall drink wine.
6. No animal shall kill another animal.
7. All animals shall be equal.
Snowball was a great warrior as well as an impressive speaker. With these two reasons, he had become very popular among all the animals of the animal farm. He was also given title, of the Hero I on account of his heroic fight in the battle for the freedom of all animals against Mr. Jones and his men. Napoleon who was evil-minded and he had great ambition became bitterly jealous of Snowball and started thinking of ways and means to turn Snowball out of the animal farm. One day, his trained and ferocious dogs made an attack on Snowball who escaped from the animal farm for ever. His exit helped Napoleon in getting cruel and absolute power to do what he liked.
Napoleon as a Corrupt and Cruel Leader
After the exit of Snowball Napoleon became certainly a corrupt and cruel leader at the animal farm. He was very corrupt because he himself violated the seven commandments. When he became an absolute leader of the animal farm, he started drinking wine. On the other hand, he was so much selfish and money minded that he sold the hay and timber of the farm to the two owners of the neighbouring farms to fill his own pockets. It is true that Napoleon was not only a corrupt leader but he was also negligent to the animals of the farm. When Boxer died, his body was sent to the house of the butcher through Squealer.
Snowball had presented the project of windmill but Napoleon opposed it because he did not like that he should become popular among the animals of the animal farm. After some time he declared that the windmill would be built in order to gain cheap popularity. When the windmill was destroyed by TUP storm he blamed Snowball but the animals did not believe him.
Napoleon as a Dictator
In the course of time Napoleon became a dictator in the animal farm. For this, he gained absolute power with an evil and selfish motive. His rise clearly shows that he was having the defects of money, power and selfishness. All these evils made him an absolute dictator. Squealer, all the pigs and his ferocious dogs helped him, right and wrong to carry out his powers and orders. He started drinking wine on the pretext that he was drinking to reduce the effect of so called poison given to him. He not only treated all other animals cruelly but he walked in the animal farm like Mr. Jones who was the leader of the Manor Farm. When he became dictator out-and-out, he started remaining away from other animals. On his birthday, a gun was fired to show that he was a superior leader of the animal farm. He also clearly said that the progress of the farm was due to him. Later on he took a contract of selling eggs to become rich. When the hens and sheep tried to oppose him they were given a threat to stop their ration and to punish them physically.
Conclusion
In short, Napoleon was not only a corrupt leader but he was greedy to earn more and more money. Squealer who was his flatterer always supported him right and wrong. Both his pigs and dogs also helped him to act as a dictator. He was so clever and cunning that he had got rid of Snowball who was his greatest rival. The readers know him as a villain in the story.
