Genghis Khan Biography and Works.

Genghis Khan was born in 1162. He was the founder and the Great Khan of the Mongol Empire. His father was Yesugei and mother was Hoelun. Genghis Khan was earlier named Temujin. When Temujin was nine years old, he found his intended bride, Borje.

At the age of 27, Temujin held a kurultai among the Mongols, who elected him Khan. The Mongols defeated the neighbouring Tatars and the Jurkins and assimilated their people. He united many of the tribes of North-East Asia. After founding the Mongol Empire, and being proclaimed Genghis Khan, he started the Mongol invasions.

The invasions were mostly in Eurasia. These were raids of the Kara Khitan Khanate, Caucasus, Khwarezmid Empire, Western Xia and Jin dynasties. By the end of his life, the Mongol Empire occupied a substantial portion of Central Asia and China. Tribes from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan heard about the Great Khan, and overthrew their Buddhist rulers to join his growing empire. By 1219, Genghis Khan ruled from northern China to the Afghan border, and Siberia to the border of Tibet.

By the end of that year, he had conquered every Khwarizm city, even lands from Turkey and Russia to his realm.

Genghis Khan assigned Ögedei Khan as his successor and split his empire into khanates among his sons and grandsons. He died in 1227 after defeating the Western Xia.

Genghis Khan promoted religious tolerance in the Mongol Empire. He guaranteed freedom of religion and protected the rights of Buddhists, Muslims, Christians and Hindus alike.

Trivia

Genghis Khan and his descendants made Mongolia the largest land empire in human history, but their story is often left out of textbooks.
