Give a brief summary of the play entitled “Animal Farm”.
Ans.
The Animals’ Fight for their Freedom
Mr. Jones who was the owner of the Manor Farm used to treat the animals of his farm cruelly. Major, an old boar asked animals to know their rights and he asked them to fight for their freedom. Major died after three days. The animals tried to find out a chance to get rid of the cruel rule of Mr. Jones. One day, he forgot to feed the animals, so they started their movement against him. First, a cow broke the door of the storeshed and other animals followed her. All the animals became united and turned Mr. Jones and his men out of the farm. In this way, the Manor Farm changed into, ‘Animal Farm’ with their freedom.
Two Great Leaders
Two pigs, Napoleon and Snowball were found as the wisest among the animals, so they became the leaders of all animals. They were satisfied because then they were working for themselves. Jones and his men made an attack on Animal Farm in the month of October. Snowball guided the military operations successfully and Boxer showed much power. The attack was defeated, so Snowball and Boxer were respected as Hero I and Hero II. From that time all the animals of Animal Farm continued to regard Snowball and Napoleon as their great and respected leaders.
Snowball’s Departure from the Farm
The animals saw a conflict between Snowball and Napoleon. Snowball thought that the spirit of revolt should also start in the neighbouring farms. He also wanted that a windmill should be founded, so that the animals might be saved from hard labour. The other animals supported his plan which was opposed by Napoleon. His trained dogs attacked Snowball who escaped from there with fear. Napoleon called Snowball a traitor and he asked all the animals to regard him as their leader.
Napoleon to tell began lies about Snowball as the only leader of the farm. He added that he would build the windmill. All the animals were much surprised. They began to work hard but the pigs did not work at all. Squealer said that the pigs did not work because they belonged to the ruling class, so they were given special food. The trained and fearful dogs and pigs enjoyed happy life with the thought of old Major. His thoughts were divided into seven commandments. The pigs began to sleep in bed and started drinking wine.
Napoleon as a Dictator
Napoleon began to act as a dictator in Animal Farm. Windmill was built by the animals but it was destroyed soon by a strong storm, so all the animals became disappointed. Napoleon blamed Snowball to have destroyed it and he told the animals that he was hiding in the neighbouring farm. The Sunday meetings were cancelled by Napoleon. When some animals wanted to revolt against him, his dogs attacked them. Many animals were killed. Napoleon broke one rule that the animals should not deal with men. He decided to sell the farm-timber to a farmer named Frederick. It was already decided that animals would not use the money of men but Napoleon took the payment of timber in cash. Later it was found that Frederick had given counterfeit notes and he also made an attack on Animal Farm and he also destroyed the windmill. Animals became angry and they defeated Frederick out of revenge. Some animals were killed in the war but Napoleon did not care for them The pigs sang songs and drank wine against the fifth rule. Later Boxer who tried to build the windmill was seriously injured.
The Animal Farm as a Manor Farm
All the animals belonging to Animal Farm again started to revolt against the rule of Napoleon and they died one after another. The animals of the new generation did not know the facts of revolution, nor they knew anything about Snowball and Boxer. The animals began to starve and the pigs were very happy because they had made good relations with men with whom they enjoyed drinking wine. Napoleon had become very fat and he declared to make better relations with human beings. The animals were surprised when they saw Napoleon and pigs walking on two legs. Napoleon walked with his bodyguards with a whip in his hand followed by pigs with their own whips. The animals found themselves as the slaves of Napoleon once again.
