Kiran Bedi Biography and Works.

India’s first and highest ranking woman police officer Kiran Bedi joined the Indian Police Service in 1972 and retired in 2007.

Her expertise includes more than 35 years of creative and reformative policing and prison management. Born on June 9, 1949, Kiran Bedi held the post of Director General’ at the Bureau of Police Research and Development before she voluntarily retired from the IPS.

Bedi has worked as the ‘Police Advisor to the Secretary General of the United Nations’ in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations and has represented India at the United Nations. She has received the President’s Gallantry Award by the President of India in 1979.

She is the founder of two NGOs – Naujyoti and India Vision Foundation – which reach out to thousands of underserved children, women and men in the sectors of education, environment, vocational skills, counselling and healthcare to the urban and rural poor.

She is consistently voted one of the most admired women in India.

Since she retired from active police duty, Bedi has become an international activist on drug abuse, crime prevention, police and prison reform, corruption, women’s issues and human welfare. Currently, she has been an active participant in the ‘India Against Corruption Movement – led by social activist, Anna Hazare. The movement compelled the government to pass a unanimous resolution in the Parliament, accepting three key demands of the Janlokpal Bill drafted by Team Anna.

Trivia

A non-fiction feature film on Bedi’s life, titled Yes, Madam Sir has won accolades at several international film festivals. She is also an Asian tennis champion.
