Lord Mountbatten Biography and Works.
Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas Mountbatten or Lord Mountbatten was born on June 25, 1900. He was a British admiral and the first Earl Mountbatten of Burma. He was born in Windsor, London. He was the youngest child of Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Victoria of Hesse. Mountbatten attended Locker’s Park Prep School and Naval Cadet School. He joined the Royal Navy during the World War I.
Before moving to India, he served as the First Sea Lord from 1954 to 1959. He was appointed as the last viceroy of the British Indian Empire in 1947.
In 1940, he invented the Mountbatten Pink naval camouflage pigment. During his career as a Supreme Allied Commander of South Asia, Mountbatten saw many high points and recapturing Burma from the Japanese after their surrender.
In India he made friends with many princes who had faith in him. During his tenure, he oversaw the partition of Pakistan and India. He remained in Delhi serving the viceroy till June 1948.
Soon after leaving India, Mountbatten served in the Mediterranean Fleet. He was honoured as the ‘First Sea Lord’. Lord Mountbatten was appointed Chief of the Defence in 1959. Mountbatten became the first Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, and kept the position until his death. During 1967-1978, he served as the president of the United World Colleges. During his presidency, he played a key role in the establishment of the United World College of South-east Asia in Singapore in 1974.
Mountbatten was married in 1922 to Edwina Cynthia Annette Ashley. They together has two daughters. Lady Mountbatten died in 1960. Mountbatten was a strong influence in the upbringing of his great-nephew, Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales.
Mountbatten was assassinated in a bomb blast by IRA in 1979. Mountbatten was buried in Romsey Abbey after a televised funeral. In 1979, Thomas McMahon was convicted of murder for his part in planning and was released in 1998.
