Rajiv Gandhi Biography and Works.

The youngest Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi was born on August 20, 1944. He was the eldest son of Indira and Feroze Gandhi. He was the 9th Prime Minister of India since his mother’s death on October 31, 1984.

As Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi endeavoured to eliminate the corrupt and criminal faces within the Indian National Congress (INC) party. To deal with the anti-Sikh agitation that followed the death of his mother Indira, Rajiv Gandhi signed an accord with Akali Dal President Sant Harchand Singh Longowal on July 24, 1985.

Rajiv Gandhi married Sonia Gandhi in 1968 after three years of courtship. They have two children – Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. While Rahul Gandhi is an active politician of the Congress, Priyanka Gandhi is married to businessman Robert Wadhera.

Going against the traditional socialism, Rajiv Gandhi decided to improve the bilateral relationships with the United States and subsequently, expanded the economic and scientific cooperation with it. His statement “When a giant tree falls, the earth below shakes’, during the anti-Sikh riots was widely criticised. Besides, Rajiv Gandhi’s name had also surfaced in the major controversies like Before and the formation of Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF).

He died on May 21, 1991, while he was on his way towards the dais at a public gathering. The assassin greeted him and bent down to touch his feet.
