Vallabhbhai Patel Biography and Works.

Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel (October 31, 1875-December 15, 1950) was an Indian barrister and statesman.

Known to be a social leader of India, Vallabhbhai played a major role in the country’s struggle for independence. Oftenly called as the ‘Iron Man of India’, he was often addressed as Sardar which means Chief in many languages of India.

He was raised in the countryside of Gujarat in Leva-Gujjar Patidar community. Vallabhbhai Patel was practising as a lawyer when he was first inspired by the work and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi.

Patel organized the peasants of Gujarat for non-violent civil disobedience against oppressive policies imposed by the British Raj. Subsequently, he became one of the most influential leaders in Gujarat.

He rose to the leadership of the Indian National Congress (INC). He was at the forefront of rebellions and all the political events in 1934 and 1937, promoting the Quit India Movement.

He was the first ‘Home Minister’ and ‘Deputy Prime Minister’ of India.

Trivia

Patel is remembered as the ‘Patron Saint’ of India’s civil servants for establishing the modern all-India services.
