Reference: These lines have been selected from the story, The Necklace, written by Guy de Maupassant, the famous French story writer. It is one of his most popular short stories.

Context: The Necklace is the story of Mathilde an exceptionally beautiful young woman born to a poor parents. As her parents had nothing to give in dowry, she was married to an ordinary clerk. Mathilde by virtue of her being a matchless beauty thought that she was born to rule the heart of wealthy people. She thought that she deserved to enjoy all the luxuries in life. But in real life, she had to live the life of an ordinary woman.

Explanation: Her poverty caused her great misery and she suffered a great deal for want of things she desired most. She felt that she was born to enjoy every delicious delicacies, finely made things and expensive articles. She was sad because the house in which she lived was not well furnished and decorated. Chairs were worn out and curtains very ugly. These are such things as the women of her class do not care for. They do not suffer because of these things such as chairs, curtains and tapestry. But since Mathilde by virtue of her being very beautiful thought that it was her right to enjoy these things, she suffered most and felt disgraced in their absence. Even the little Breton girl who came to do domestic work in her house aroused heart broken regret and hopeless dreams in her. She imagined romantic atmosphere of silent antechamber, heavy tapestry with oriental designs on it. She dreams of her house being guarded by two tall watchmen. In short, she dreamed of everything in her house that a princess would like to have. But these things were beyond her reach and she had no hope of realizing her dreams. This made her sad and she remained discontented with but she had pining what she had not.

Context: Mathilde, the heroine of the story enjoyed the ball heartily. Because of her exceptional beauty, she drew the attention of the dignitaries present there. She was the apple of everyone’s eyes and everyone wanted to be introduced to her. She was very happy of the victory of her beauty and kept dancing the whole night.

Explanation: Mathilde left the function at four in the morning. She was enjoying the ball in the company of guests and big men forgetting all about her clerk husband who was dozing in a lonely little room in the company of three other men whose beautiful wives were also enjoying the function dancing and hobnobbing with fashionable rich men. When she left the function, her husband threw upon her the clothes he had brought for them to return home in. These clothes presented a contrast to her fashionable dress that she was wearing in the function. They revealed her poverty and she was aware of it and so, she was in a hurry to return home lest some other women wearing costly fur garments should notice her wearing ordinary clothes.
