What is the difference between virtue and rectitude? Explain it briefly.

Ans.

Introduction

There are two types of persons. Some of them have the quality of virtue in their character and they remain conscious of such virtue. Secondly there are some other persons, different from first type of persons. They do have the quality of virtue and they also make its use in their real life. According to the writer, a man who lives good life with ideal social behaviour gets more rewards in his practical life than that man who is only conscious of virtue but he does not get a chance to show it in his everyday life.

The difference between virtue and rectitude

After reading the contents of this essay, ‘Tight Corners’ we note two types of persons who behave differently in their life. The meaning of the word, ‘rectitude’ means that shows correctness which is used in the real social sense. Secondly, the word. ‘virtue’ has spiritual and religious significance.

It is necessary to mention that a man with good social behaviour may not be a good or virtuous man because he may ignore the ideals of good behaviour. According to the writer, the qualities of politeness, trust and sympathy are much needed in real life, so they are the part and parcel of spiritual or religious life. It should not be a matter of surprise that a man who has the quality of rectitude in his life often gets more rewards than that man who has virtuous and noble life according to the religious and spiritual sense. We should always remember the relationship between, ‘the career of rectitude’ and. ‘mere consciousness of virtue’. The writer asserts that we should always keep it in our mind. Career means action and behaviour but consciousness means something only theoretical.

The writer asserts the need of practical use of moral values than theoretical awareness. The writer himself had been living a life of rectitude and he never deviated from it in his life. Nobody had any doubt about him that he was without necessary resource, yet he took an active part in the auction. Its reason is that his friend has persuaded him to enter the sale-room of auction. When the writer fell into the tight corner, that friend disappeared because he was very selfish. On the other hand that man who had committed the blunder to make the bid of 4,050 guineas to buy the painting only out of fun was helped by God because he was good and honest. In this way it was his goodluck that he had become free from the misery of the tight corner. In short, it was the result of the quality of the virtue of rectitude of his character. It shows the difference between the writer and his friend with their opposite sense of virtue.
