Write the summary of the play “The Student”.
Ans.
The beginning of the new Academic Session
When the new academic session begins in the college, the students feel very enthusiastic, They also become eager to meet their new professors and purchase new books to study them with a feeling that they are setting out on a new journey. They like their new books and open their pages with much interest. They prefer to read new books to old books or second-hand books to get necessary pleasure. They give up the old books like sweetmeats which had been tasted by somebody else.
The student’s deep longing
As the new session begins, the student is full of new enthusiasm. He turns the pages of his new books as the symbol of a new dawn. He has a deep longing in his heart to become a perfect scholar by learning new subjects. He develops interest for music with the dream of a great musician like Schumann who had learnt to play on piano at the age of twenty years. By following his example, the student started music practice but gave it up only after three days. He felt satisfied with the knowledge of music from Grove’s dictionary.
The student’s desire to learn every subject
It is necessary to mention that the student in his own student life wanted to learn every subject thinking that every subject was like a hill to climb and any hill was better than no hill. He made the study of the university calendar and thought of the study of some courses like engineering and political economy. But he could not get necessary knowledge in any of them. He thought to become an architect but he could not distinguish between a house and a bee-hive. He was eager to master every subject but it was impossible for him. We must give credit to the learning zeal of the student.
The fixed aim of some students
Some students decide their career after leaving the school with the fixed aim at the joining of the college. For example, they may decide to join the church as a preacher, the bar as a lawyer or some civil service. They do not turn their attention to other subjects because they devote their maximum time to prepare for the final examinations. They study that which is related to their course only without wasting their time and energy on literature or general subjects only for fun. They become successful in their career than in their life. Such students cannot be inventors, statesmen, poets or leaders. On the other hand, some other students waste their money, time and energy on petty pleasures of life and they neglect studies on the pretext of being original. It is not proper because an ideal student must maintain a balance between discipline and pleasure in order to keep his originality without neglecting his studies.
The double dream of an ideal student
It is very necessary to mention that an ideal student should have double dream-the dream of getting knowledge as well as the dream of developing his character. He should also mix with other students and talk to them on relevant subjects related to his studies in education. He should contact other serious students to have their useful ideas. Such contact with them helps in the mental development of each and every student.
