Summary Of The Novel
Raju’s business had failed. He had little money left with him. His creditor, the Sait, came to his house to realize money. At that time Rosie was practicing dance and Raju was watching her. He felt very small. He had ruined all that his father had built with great labour. The Sait wanted money. Raju made fun of him. The Sait felt insulted and left in anger. Raju did not want Rosie to know his troubles. Living with her under the same roof was enough for him.
Raju’s problems were increasing. The Sait filed a suit against him and dragged him to a court. His mother did not like him for his relations with Rosie. He had not a friend in the world except Gaffur, the taxi-driver. Raju turned to Gaffur for advice and help. Gaffur advised him to take up his old business as a tourist guide. Raju wanted a loan of five hundred rupees. Gaffur could not afford it. He advised Raju to sent away Rosie. Raju was losing friends. Thus Gaffur was also Gost.
Gaffur was not the last to pass out of Raju’s life. Soon his mother’s turn cam While Rosie practiced dance Raju watched her. But actually he wanted her curves which tempted him to embrace her on the spot. These days they had to seize their romantic moments. They had to go through with it at odd times. They utilized the time in love and romance, when the mother went to fetch water. It made Raju forget his troubles. She was a devoted artist. She gave the first place to art.
Raju drew from the bank whatever little money was left in the savings. He engaged a small lawyer who handled his case in the court. He had to give him part of that money. They mother feared that the Sait would throw them out of their house. But Raju seemed to have no burden on his mind. The mother had her own scheme to handle Raju.
One morning Rosie was at her dance practice and Raju was watching her. Suddenly his uncle arrived. For Raju, it was a bolt from the blue. Raju’s mother was in touch with him through a postcard a month. His arrival created a stir in the house. He came in response to the mother’s letter. She had not told Raju about it.
The uncle was out to quarrel with Raju. He began to snub and scold Raju. He pulled him down by the collar of his shirt.
The mother seemed to enjoy the scene because she had planned it. Raju felt confused and angry. The uncle was attacking him in his own house. There was danger for Rosie. Raju advised Rosie not to bother about the uncle. He was in a challenging mood. He was free to do anything in his house. If people did not like him, they should not visit him.
Then the uncle turned to Rosie. He asked her to stop her dance and music. He told her clearly she must pack up and go as she did not belong to the house. It was too much for Rosie to bear. She sank known. She covered her face with her hands. The uncle told her to clear out by the next train. He would give her money for her railway ticket. Raju was mad with rage. He attacked his uncle and told him to get out. The uncle too strong for Raju. The mother blamed Rosie for the ruin of Raju.
Raju seemed powerless and helpless before his uncle. There seemed to be no way of saving Rosie. The uncle was too strong to be pushed out physically. The mother had turned against him on getting support from her brother. Raju advised Rosie to shut her ears to all that. She must not leave. Others who did not like her could leave the house. Rosie acted upon his ad vice, At this the mother decided to leave the house. She got ready to go to the village with her brother. Raju was firm that Rosie won’t go. Raju was sad at his mother’s departure.
Now Raju and Rosie lived like a married couple. Rosie cooked the food and kept the house. All day long she danced and sang. Raju remained lost in the world of love and romance. He found that Rosie was fact up with it all. She had sufficient practice. She could give a show of four hours. Raju began to think seriously. First of all, Rosie must change her name.
“Nalini’ was the name selected for Rosie. With a new name, Rosie entered a new phase of life. Under her new name her past was buried from public view. Raju was the only one who knew her as Rosie. To the rest of the world she was Nalini. Raju went out and met people in the town. He attended meetings of various clubs and societies. He watched for a chance. He could impress people with his fine words.
At last Raju succeeded in his effort. He managed to get a chance for Rosie to give a public performance. She impressed the people who came to see her. All arrangements were made for the debut. Raja brought the men of the Albert Mission Committee to his house. He kept them waiting as if Rosie very busy. He introduced them to Rosie as his friends. They explained that they were holding a variety-show. They wondered if she could give them some time. She showed them a sample of her dance. They were fascinated. Thus Raju arranged Rosie’s first appearance on the stage.
