Explanations

(1) They faced the afternoon………………in search of water.

Reference: These lines appear in the story, Games at Twilight, written by Anita Desai.

Context: It was a hot afternoon. Children wanted to go out and play in the veranda and porch. But their mother would not let them go out. When the children assured their mother that they would not go beyond the veranda and porch, she opened the door and wallowed them to play.

Explanation: The story writer gives a vivid account of the hot afternoon. It was very hot and the sun shone brightly. Everything seemed to be affected by the glaring sun. Even the white walls of the veranda shone brightly in the sun. The tropical climbing plant with its colourful flowers hung lastlessly. The floor of the garden looked like a beaten sheet of brass in the pale light of the sun. Birds were sitting in the shed of tree but they were quite inactive and motionless and so they looked like dead fruit. There was no sign of life in the garden at this hour of the day. Some squirrels were lying limp on the wet soil under the garden tap. The dog that watched the house lay stretched on the veranda mat. It is so still that it looks as though it is dead with its parts of the body stretched, it looks like a traveler dying in search of water.

(2) But Raghu soon…………..the stranger.

Reference: These lines have been selected from the story Games at Twilight, written by Anita Desai.

Context: Children were playing the game of hide and seek. Ravi hid inside a shed with a big green door. It may be called a junk store as broken furniture and useless articles were heaped in it and it was opened only once in a year. Ravi was sure that no one would be able to found him out and he would win the game.

Explanation: Raghu in search of Ravi went close to the shed where Ravi was hidden. But he did not enter the shed and moved away. Ravi took a sigh of relief when he did not hear the sound of Raghu’s footsteps. Raghu had gone around the garage and disappeared. Ravi stood still inside the shed. Then he felt something creeping on the back of his back. This made him tremble in fear. He gathered courage and took his hand to his neck to feel what the creeping insect was. It was, perhaps a spider moving in his body. He crushed it and wondered there might be many more insects in the shed waiting to creep on his body as he was a stranger to them and they wanted to know more of him.
