Usain Bolt was born as Usain St. Leo Bolt on August 21, 1986 in Sherwood Content, Jamaica to Jennifer and Wellesley Bolt. As a kid Bolt used to spend his time playing cricket and football with his brother. Bolt had always been a fast runner and participated in many school competitions. He won many 10-meter running games in school. After completing his primary education, he moved to the William Knibb Memorial High School. Bolt had an interest in every sport. But his cricket coach noticed Bolt’s speed on the field and encouraged Bolt to try track and field. Bolt started to get trained by a former Olympic sprinter named Pablo McNeil.

At the age of fourteen, Usain participated in his first high school championship. He won silver in the 200 meters race with his lightning speed. In 2001, he participated in the first major international sporting event called the IAAF World Youth Championship. Even though Bolt didn’t win the 200 meters race, he finished the race in 21.73 seconds. It was his personal best at the time. By the time he was fifteen, he had grown to 6 ft. 5 inches in height and already stood out amongst his rivals.

In 2002, Bolt participated in the World Junior Championships. He won the gold medal in the 200 meters race, making him the youngest junior gold medalist in the world. In 2003, Bolt participated in the Jamaican High School Championships. He won both, the 200-meter and 400-meter running events in record time. The same year he won gold at the World Youth Championship.

Bolt started his professional career in 2004 under coach Fitz Coleman. That year he participated in three events, the 2004 CARIFTA Games in Bermuda, 2004 World Junior Championships and the popular 2004 Athens Olympics. However, he failed the 200-meter Olympic qualifier event due to a leg injury.

In 2005, Bolt started to train with a new coach named Glen Mills. Bolt finished his next 200-meter race in just 19.99 seconds. He entered the world Top 5 rankings in 2005 and 2006. In 2006, Bolt sustained a severe injury and couldn’t participate in the 2006 Commonwealth Games. The only event he won was the IAAF World Athletics Final in Germany. Unfortunately, his injuries continued to trouble him. It limited him from completing a full professional season. In 2007, Bolt made his comeback by participating in the World Championship, earning two silver medals and breaking the 200-meter record.

Bolt showed his full potential in 2008 when he participated in his first Olympics. He won three gold medals in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 400-meter relay. He set new world records in all three events and became an icon. In 2009, Bolt participated in the Berlin World Championships. He once again broke his previous world records in the 100-meter and 200-meter races. He finished the 100-meter race in 9.58 seconds.

In 2016, Bolt achieved the “triple-triple” after participating in the Rio Olympics. He won three gold medals in all three events.

2017 was the worst year of Bolt’s career. He didn’t perform well in any of his matches, and many believed that the 400-meter relay would be Bolt’s final race. During the race Bolt fell and sustained a hamstring injury. He had to cross the finish line with the help of his teammates. The same year Bolt announced his retirement from track and field.

Apart from his sport, Bolt is involved in a lot of humanitarian work. He donated $50,000 to the victims of the 2008 Siachen earthquake. He started the Usain Bolt Foundation, dedicated to providing educational and cultural development for disadvantaged children.
