SUMMARY OF THE NOVEL
Raju is feeling lonely. He is sitting on the bank of the river. He feels happy when a villager named Velan comes to him. The man is from Mangala. Raju looks like a saint and behaves like a saint. The villager has a problem. He wants guidance.
Velan comes out with his problem. He has a step-sister of marriage able age. Raju knows much of what Velan has to say. He wants Raju’s advice and guidance. Raju impresses him with common place sayings. Velan tries to touch his feet. Raju feels that he can act perfectly as a saint. He is clever enough to guess the problems of people and guide them to their satisfaction.
Raju remembers his own troubles. They started with Rosie. Rosie was just an Indian. She chose to call Rosie, otherwise there was nothing English about her. She was just an orthodox dancer. At the first meting Raju praised her as a great dancer. It pleased her. Raju praised her art whenever he I was alone with her.
Rosie’s husband was a very funny man. He was always dressed like a tourist on an expedition. In his dress he looked like a space-traveler. Raju gave him the name of Marco Polo. A guide is always in search of such a person. The railways had gone into Raju’s blood every early in life.
His father had build a small house long before the coming of trains. It was called the ‘Hut Shop’ because his father ran a small shop there. His father taught him alphabet and arithmetic. But Raju was more fond of playing than reading. The Hut Shop remained open till midnight. His father ignored food and sleep when he had company.
He takes no interest in what velan says. He asks them to wait inside. Raju is pleased to see that Velan has brought milk and fruit for him. He can eat anything now. Prison life has trained him to eat anything at any time. Raju has become a perfect actor now. he can easily handle situations. He is the master of such occasions. He impresses Velan with his common sense and common place sayings. He wants time to think over Velan’s problem. He feels as if he is growing wings. His life in prison has given him a new life. He looks meaning fully at Velan and his sister. She bows her head. Velan looks relieved. They go back satisfied.
