Summary Of The Novel
Raju had to spend three days in the lock-up. The S.P. was no longer friendly to him in the Police Station. Rosie came to see him and wept. After three days Raju was able to come back house. The old life was gone. Raju had no work to do. No visitors came. Now Raju was a longer-on in the house. The mastery had passed into Rosie’s hand. She rarely spoke to him. He ate his food in silence.
Raju suggested that Rosie should go through with her engagements for the next three months. She did not answer. The servants began to gossip. Marco had proved very revengeful. Raju had almost forgotten him. He had caught him in his trap. Raju had made a mess of the finances. She wanted to know where all the money had gone. She could not go through with the programmes because she could not face the public again.
Raju argued that only he was under arrest. She could go about her business normally. He asked her about her plans for the future. She had a mind to go back to her husband. She hoped that he would take her back, if she stopped dancing. Raju had doubts. Marco could take her back, if it were only the question of dancing. It was very cutting hint. Rosie was very much hurt. She said that her husband might not allow her to enter his house. In that case she would prefer to end her life on his doorstep. She suggested that suicide would be the best solution for both of them.
Raju wanted her to keep dancing. He felt he must take charge of her again. Rosie would not dance in public anymore even if he was free. She was tired of that circus existence. But she assured him that she would help him at all costs. She would do all to save him from jail. But once it was over’ he must leave her once for all. He must forget her and leave her to live or die, as she liked.
She was as good as her word. She suddenly became active. She sold her diamonds. She became practical-minded. She engaged the top-most lawyer for Raju. She was going about her business wonderfully well. She was doing it all for Raju. She had that vigour and vitality in her that she could go ahead in life with Marco or Raju.
The lawyer defended Raju’s case in his own way. But Raju was sent to prison for two years. He was considered a model prisoner in the jail. There he developed good relations with all and became very popular. He took a very happy view of his prison life. He found it the most agreeable place on the earth. He felt sad when he had to come out after two years. He would have been happy to stay there permanently.
There Raju got a chance to read newspapers. He got all the news. He learnt that Nalini had left the town and settled at Madras. She was given a very warm send-off by a huge crowd at the railway station. She had cleared all debts. The book by Macro was the only article that she carried with her.
