Summary Of The Novel
Raju went on telling Velan the story of his life and career all night long. The village had not yet wakened to life. Raju had mentioned every detail from his birth to the time he came out of the prison. He expected Velan to hate and curse him for fooling the people. But he was surprised when Velan ad dressed him as “Swami”. Velan assured him that he would never speak a word about it to anyone.
The news of Swami’s fast and penance spread far and wide. It appeared in the papers. Public interest was roused. The Swami stood knee-deep in water praying to the gods for rain. He took no notice of the big crowd around him. He fasted totally. The villagers left their work to be near this great soul.
The crowd went on increasing day by day. It was actually the fourth day of his fast. On the first day he had stolen a chance to car some stale food like a thief. He was fed up with the whole affair. He wanted to shout to the people that he was no saint. He could not save them. he could not bring rain. Why were they forcing him to fast and make penance? His heart was not in it
After the first two days a great change came in Raju. Many thoughts came to his mind. The sight of Velan touched him. The poor fellow was doing his best to make the penance a success. He made his mind to banish Ali thoughts of food from his mind. This resolution gave him a new strength. It by fasting rain could come, he would do it sincerely. For the first time in his life, he was doing something for others outside the sphere of love and money. On the fourth day of the fast he was quite cheerful. He went down to the river shut his eyes and prayed to the gods to send rain and save humanity. He went on saying it over and over again, it was strange type of happiness, far better than eating the best food in the world.
The crowd was getting larger. The railways had to run special trains Buses ran between Malgudi and Mangala.
The Swami’s fame had spread for and wide. A large crowd always stood around. They touched the water at his feet and sprinkled it over this heads. Letters and telegrams were pouring in from all over the country wishing the Swami success.
On the tenth day of the fast, an American film producer came from California, to shoot the subject, he wanted permission to take pictures of the Swami without disturbing him. He put a few questions to the Swami and re corded the interview. The Swami hoped that his fast should bring rain. He recommended fasting for everyone. It should abolish wars and bring peace in the world. Raju felt weak and tired after the interview.
A few doctors were deputed by the government to watch and report. They examined him thoroughly. His condition was not satisfactory. There was still another day. The fast was to be broken on the twelfth day. It seemed difficult for him to pull through another day. His life was considered valuable to the country. The eleventh day was the last day of the fast. People had been arriving all through the night. In the morning, the doctors examined the Swami. His condition was serious. They received orders from the government that the Swami should be saved.
Velan and another man helped Raju to his feet. He went down the steps of the river with their help. He shut his eyes. His lips moved in prayer. They held him as if were a baby. Raju was awfully weak and faint. He opened his eyes, looked, about and said, “Velan, it is raining in the hills. With these words he sagged down. The rain in the hills was perhaps the dreams of his mind made faint by starvation.
