Summary Of The Novel
In front of Raju’s house, workers were building a railways track, Work was going on briskly. Raju spent all his time in the company of the men working on the track. He listened to their talk and shared their jokes. Raju began to consider himself the master of the railway. There was a quarrel. Raju used very dirty words. His father decided to send him to school because he was getting spoilt in the company of workmen on the track.
But Raju preferred staying to reading and being at home than to and be sent to school. But his father was a strict man. Raju went to school regularly. The master was an old man. Raju’s father believed that the school where Raju was sent was the best under the sun. He often boasted that the students taught by the old master rose to be big officers.
It could not be called a school. It was situated in an old house. The master lived in that house. He taught the boys on the platform in front and the street drain ran right below it. All the classes were held at the same time. The master was a very abusive man. Raju’s father had certainly not made a safer choice in sending Raju to that old man.
It was not the mistakes made by the boy that irritated him. Their very presence irritates him. They made a lot of noise. When the master went into his house, the boys made all sorts of mischiefs. Once they found him cooking food. He got very angry. He threatened them over to the police.
The master’s only interest in the boys was one rupee a month and anything else in kind they brought for him. Within a year Raju was good enough for the first standard in Board High School. He could read book and do sums of arithmetic. The old master himself took Raju to the Board School. He ad mitted the boy there. He saw him off in his new class. He blessed him before taking leave of him. It was a pleasant surprise for the boy that he could be so kind.
Velan is bursting with the news of a miracle. He informs Raju that things have turned out well. It is nothing short of a miracle. Raju has saved the family from ruin. Velan is greatly impressed. He believes that Raju is omni scient (all knowing).
Raju has been very smart. He is afraid of opening his lips. Velan’s problem has been solved. He does not want to be seen in a crowd. He does not want to gather a crowd around him.
Raju’s reputation travels and his circle goes on widening. Velan, after his day’s work, comes to him daily. “Raju may or may not speak, he is full of respect for him. Some others also come there regularly. He does not speak to them. They just sit silent and look at him. Raju tries hard to think what he should do next and where he should go. He feels uneasy and wants to escape from their company. He remains alone throughout the day. The villagers come to him in the evening after their day’s work.
It becomes clear to Raju that he is held in high esteem by the people. They consider him a great saint. He gives a deep thought to the problem of his future. He has to take a decision. Where can he go? He has not trained himself to make a living out of hard work. Here food is coming to him unasked. If he goes away somewhere else, nobody will take the trouble to bring him food. He must play the role that Velan has given him. With that decision in his mind, he prepares himself to meet Velan and his friends. He decides to play the saint more brilliantly.
