Summary Of The Novel

Men, women and children came in a large number. They wanted to have a look at Raju and see the divine light on his face. Raju rose to the occasion. He talked to the children. The boys did not go to school, Raju shook his head. He explained that boys must read. If they could not find time during the day, they could gather in the temple in the evening and learn. The gathering was impressed. He would arrange for a teacher. If there was a school master in the village, he should come and see him. It was his command with authority. The next day a timid man came to see him in the afternoon. He introduced himself as the teacher. Raju asked him to run a night class for the boys there in the temple. The teacher did his best. Raju said that he wanted the boys to be educated and intelligent. He wanted everyone to be happy and wise. The teacher was greatly impressed. He went back to the village like a changed man.

The next day, the teacher was back with a dozen children of the village. They were afraid of crossing the river in the dark. Raju expressed very pious sentiments. Raju was wondering at his own wisdom. The teacher was greatly impressed. Raju got a chance to air his views on life before the boys. He spoke to them on all kinds of things. He saw the upturned faces of the children. He felt that he was growing big.

(The story of the novel goes back to Raju’s past, as a Shop-keeper at the Malgudi Railway Station). As a railways shopkeeper, Raju felt that he was too good for that task. He was meant for higher things, Raju’s father died a sudden death, Raju gave maximum time and respect to his mother. With her consent he closed down his father’s hut-shop. It was then that he began to develop new lines. He stocked old magazines and newspapers and bought and sold school books. School and college students came to his shop. He liked to talk to people. He liked to hear people talk.

Books took the place of coconuts at his railway shop. People dumped all types of books and printed stuff on him. During his father’s time, it was impossible to find even a scrap of paper in the shop. After his death, Raju adopted a new policy. He made it known far and wide that he was looking for old paper and books. In his off hours he sorted them out. He developed a habit of reading. He read widely. He read books magazines and papers on a wide variety of subjects. He read books on religion, philosophy, art and culture. He learnt a lot from scrap. His mind was filled with knowledge.

As a saint, Raju gave a specific programme. He chanted holy songs. The audience joined. The hall echoed with the voices of men, women and children repeating holy words together. Soon women started coming during the day. Raju thought of growing a beard and long hair to look more impressive. By the time he grew a long beard, his prestige had grown beyond his dreams. His gatherings had become so large that people sat right up to the edge of the river. He seemed to belong to the world now. His influence was unlimited. He chanted holy verses and delivered lectures on philosophy. He prescribed medicines and cured diseases. It was believed that his touch had a healing power.
