Summary Of The Novel

Raju was taken for a saint. He decided to play that role gracefully. Soon he established himself as a saint. Months and years passed. When festivals came, the villagers brought special gifts for him. He kept long hair and a long beard. His eyes shone with the light of pity. The villagers loved to bring him gifts. He came to be called Swami and the place where he lived was called the Temple.

The year was coming to an end and there were no rains. The land was parched. The crops were dying. There was no grass for the cattle. The villagers were worried. They complained to the swami ji. Even the river was drying up.

The villagers listened to Raju’s lectures only with half interest. They asked him why the rains had failed and how the drought could be ended. Raju had no ready answer. One could count the bones of the cattle. The wells in the villages were drying up. The earth was fast drying up. Cattle had begun to die.

The drought created famine conditions. The granary in almost every house had gone empty. The village shopman had raised the prices of all types of rain. There was a fight in the village.

Velan’s brother brought to Raju the news of the fight. There was going to be another fight at night. Raju was amazed. He did not know what to do.

Velan’s brother went back to the village and said to the villagers, “The Swami does not want food because if does not rain. He wants no fight.” He repeated the message. The Swami won’t eat. He wanted no food until it was all right.

The message given by the idiot was misinterpreted by the elders. They thought that the Swami was going on fast for their sake. They felt blessed. They thought that he was like Mahatma Gandhi. His fast would certainly bring rain. The villagers forgot their fight and all their troubles. They went to him in a crowd. They carried no food or gifts for him because they thought that he was fasting for the sake.

Raju, on the other hand, was waiting for his usual gifts and food. He saw a bigger crowd than usual. He got ready for his professional role. The people were happy. He was happy that he had prevented a fight and saved the village. At the end of his lecture, Velan said that every villager was praying for the success of his fast. Raju was puzzled. The people began to praise him loudly. A woman touched his feet. Another did the same, All the people crowded round him. He tried to cover his feet. But there was no escape from them. He let them do what they liked. Almost everyone in the crowd touched his feet. Raju began to think that his personally gave out a glory.

The crowd left at midnight. But Velan remained there. He considered it a pious duty to be by his side when he was undertaking such a fast. Raju was really touched.

Velan respectfully; informed him of what he, as the Saviour, was expected. to do. He must stand in knee-deep water, look to the skies and offer prayers to God for two weeks. He must observe complete fast during the period. If it was performed by a pure soul, the rains would certainly come. The word had gone round that he was fasting. Raju felt that the time had come him to be serious.

Raju took into confidence and said, “Come nearer. Sit down and listen to me….I am prepared to fast for the sake of your people and do anything if I can help country it is to be done only by a saint. I am no saint.”

Velan tried to protest. Raju was really sorry for shattering his faith. But it was the only way out. It was a cool night. Raju took Velan to the river step. He sat close to Velan and told him his whole story. He repeated that he was not a saint. He was just an ordinary man like anyone else. He went on telling his story and Velan went on listening to him, without a word of surprise.
