Rosie was the greatest dreamer. She needed a husband who could care for her career. It was here that a handy man like Raju proved invaluable. Marco stayed for more than a month at the Peak House all his affairs were in Raju’s charge. They still kept their room in the hotel. Gafur’s car was permanently engaged. At the peak House. Joseph looked after Marco. Now Raju’s only routine jobs were to keep Rosie company and to amuse her.
Once in tow days. Rosie went up to see her husband. Rosie did not take any interest in the work Marco was doing. Her intimacy with Raju was growing. Raju was in a normal state of mind. He was observed with thoughts of Rosie. He had many problems of face. her husband was no problem at all. he was a good man busy wish his own work. He had an abnormal capacity for trust. But Raju was becoming nervous and sensitive. His mind was full of fears.
Raju’s bank balance was going down. Luckily his father had left him money in the bank. But to him Rosie seemed to be the only reality in life. All his attention was turned to keep her within his reach and keep her smiling all the time. But in that hotel it was not easy, he did not want to be observed going to Room 28.
In many was Raju found Rosie difficult to understand. No doubt, she allowed him to make love to her. But she had begun to show too much consideration for her husband on the hill. Raju did not take it. But he could not be angry with her.
She started crying, “After all…After all…Is this right what I un doing? After all, he has been so good to me, given me comfort and freedom. What husband in the world would let his wife go and live in a hotel room y herself, a hundred miles away?”
Sometimes Raju heartily wished the man to take her back and leave him in peace. That would end the whole business one for all. Then he would return to his platform duties. But Marco’s work continued. With it continued Raju’s agony. Rosie perhaps wanted to best of both the world.
Rosie’s eyes lit up with a new hope. Raju spoke about the dance. After all it her art that he had first admired, On evening she suddenly asked him if he was also like her husband in bating to see her dance. Raju still claimed to be a great lover of her dance. He could give his life to see her dance. She brightened up. Raju found out the clue to her affection. He utilized it to the utmost. Her art and her husband could not find a place in her thoughts at the same time. When one was in, the other was out. She was full of plans and dreams. Raju showed great interest in her love of art and her dreams.
They immediately went back to Room 28. She at once put on her dance dress and began to perform for Raju. She softly sang a song of love. Raju was thrilled. He sat gaping with wonder. Suddenly she stopped and jumped into his lap with utmost pleasure of love. She was in the seventh heaven of happiness.
Rosie was hopeful that her husband would agree to the proposal for her career as a dancer. Then she, with Raju’s help, would give public performances of her dance.
Raju left Rosie with her husband at the Peak House. he returned two days later. he found them cold. They did not speak to each other. Nor did they speak to Raju. Something serious seemed to have happened. Perhaps Marco had come to know of Rosie’s affair with Raju.
Raju wanted to thrash out the matter with Marco. He was ready to fight with him. Marco turned a deaf ear to him. Rosie harshly told Raju to leave. He felt insulted. But he had to go back. He felt very miserable. he had no taste for food, no sleep at night. His mind was troubled. Things had happened in the most unexpected way. He could not understand why Rosie sided with her husband.
Raju had passed only thirty days. To him it looked like years. Once afternoon, he found Rosie at his door with a trunk and a bag. Raju took her in without asking a question. He introduced her to his mother and told her that she was going to be a guest in the house. The mother asked Rosie who had come with her. Rosie blushed, hesitated and looked at Raju. He came to her rescue. He replied that Rosie had come alone from Madras to see some friends.
Raju took Rosie out. He could not talk to her in his house. Raju wanted to know everything from beginning to end. Rosie narrated to him the chain of events which ultimately brought her to his door. According to his plan, she had gone to the Peak House to get her husband’s permission to dance. He was quite happy till she mentioned it. The word “dance” always stung him. He flared up with rage.
Marco’s tone grew nice and kind. She felt encouraged. She performed a bit of dance for him. He did not like it. She committed a blunder. She told him that everyone except him like it. For instance, Raju liked it very much. Marco asked her where she had done it for Raju. It was in the hotel room. Thus the cat was out of the bag. Marco’s suspicion was aroused. he questioned her minutely. She had to answer all his questions. It was enough for Marco to know what she and Raju had been doing. She realized that she had committed a great sin. Her mind was greatly troubled. She did not want anything more in life than to make her peace with him. She did not want to dance. She was in terror.
She said, “I have come to apologize sincerely. I will do whatever you ask me to do. I committed a blunder…” He make no answer he did not speak to her at all. He was utterly cold. He behaved as if she did not exist. It is too much for her to bear. It went on day after day. She went on hoping against hope. She found that he would not eat the food she touched. She ate her food alone in the kitchen. If she lay on the bed, he slept on the floor. So she started sleeping on the floor, and he went and lay on the bed. He never looked at her or spoke. She followed him like a dog. But he ignored her completely. She left her pride and self-respect. She hoped that ultimately he would come round. She never left his side. So one night she asked him if he had not punished her enough. He told her once for all not to talk him. He could go where she liked and she do what she pleased.
She wanted to forget everything and forgive her. It seemed enough if he forgive and took her back. But he was in no mood to forgive and forget.
He said, “Yes I am trying to forget that I ever took a wife.”.
“I am your wife and I am with you.”
“You are not my wife. You are a woman who will go to bed with anyone who flatters you.”
Then one day Marco packed up and went to railway station. Rosie followed him. He purchased no ticket for her. When she tried to get into the compartment he shut the door on her. He left by train and she came to Raju’s house. That was the chain of events which brought her to Raju’s door. Raju comforted her and assured her to make her the greatest artist of the age.
Rosie continued to live in Raju’s house. Soon Raju’s mother under stood everything. She was against keeping a dancing girl in the House. Rosie had begun to practice dancing.
Raju’s mother could not put up with the idea of living with tainted woman. Raju was getting annoyed with his mother. The girl looked happy and careful. Raju feared lest his mother should openly tell her to go.
The mother had a different opinion-“Why can’t she go to her husband and fall at his feet?” Whenever she spoke to Rosie, she hinted at the problems of husband and wife. Rosie was cut to the quick. Raju could not do anything. He was afraid of his mother. He could not keep Rosie in a hotel. His finances did not allow it. He saw Rosie suffer. But he was helpless. His only comfort was that he suffered with her.
Raju’s financial worries were increasing. His sales at the shop were declining. His income was going down. Suddenly the railways gave him notice to quit. The shop was given to a new contractor. He grew angry and desperate. He was in tears to see a new man in the shop where he and his father had been. It as an ugly situation. Rosie had seen it all. He was definitely cut off from the railways. He could no face Rosie who was staring at him. His sorrow knew no bounds.
