They had all comforts and luxuries and a large staff of servants. Raju had his office on the ground floor. He had a secretary for office work. Raju became a big and important man. All important people were friends. He was intimate with them because they were men of money and influence. Nalini carried on her practice upstairs. She was surrounded by great artists. She had a busy schedule of engagements.
Raju and Nalini were working like machines and growing very rich. Raju demanded the highest fee. Monthly income was very high. A lot of money was spent on servants and style. But, somehow, Nalini did not feel very happy. She was not much interested in money. She felt that she got no time to enjoy the use of money. She complained that she had no freedom.
Raju wanted to make more and more money. He gave the greatest importance to money. He considered it a sin not to work and earn when the time was good. he ran the bank account in Nalini’s name. She signed any cheque he asked her to sign. he secretly took drinks and played cards in the company of men of money and influence. Thus Raju was becoming a man of money and influence.
In his success and glory Raju had completely forgotten Marco. he never bothered to knew whether Marco was dead of alive. He thoughts that Rosie was quite safe under the name Nalini. But he was wrong. The postman one day brought a book by Marco. he took the book and began to turn the pages. he had a mind to take it to Nalini. But on second thought he decided to keep it a secret. He looked it up. he never mentioned the book to her.
Three days later, Nalini saw the photograph of Marco in the paper. His book was greatly praised. Nalini came running to Raju with the paper in her hand. She was eager to see the book. She suddenly called the secretary and asked him to get the book by Marco. For a moment Raju thought of bringing the book out to her. But he suppressed the whole thing. She took a cutting of he: husband’s photo and placed in on her dressing-mirror. She was anger with Raju for hiding the book. she was pleased that her husband had made a name. Raju reminded her now Marco had left her at Malgudi. She believed that her husband was right. Any other husband would have killed her on the spot.
Raju could not understand her sudden affection for her husband. Her career was at its height. She moods could ruin them both. Something was seriously wrong with her. In spite of that name, fame and wealth she was not happy. She had achieved what she wanted. But she was sick. She felt like a parrot in a cage being taken around village fairs or a performing monkey as Marco used to say.
Raju had taken heavy advance payments. He kept her in good humour and she went on dancing for him. One day he came upon a letter addressed to Rosie, alias Nalini. It had come from a lawyer’s firm in Madras. He felt nervous about opening the letter. Raju cut it open and read it. The lawyer had requested Rosie/Nalini to sign the enclosed application for the release of a jewellery box in the safe custody of a bank. The deposit was in joint names. The box after the release would be sent to her in due course.
Raju was delighted. There was going to be more jewellery for her. He decided not to show her the letter. Showing her letter might prove suicidal. She might stop dancing and go back to her husband. He could not sleep at night. He got up and forged her signature on the application form. In the morning, he himself went to the post office and sent it to the lawyer.
Every day Raju waited for the jewel box to come. But no parcel arrived. There came a warrant for his arrest on a complaint from Marco on the charge of forgery.
Raju stood thinking. The Inspector asked him if he had signed any document for the lady. Of course, he did it because she was busy. It could not be called forgery. He had just written her name. It was a serious charge and Raju was to be taken in custody. Raju went in to tell her about it. She was stunned. She did not break down. She merely said, “I felt all along you were not doing right things. This is Karma. What can we do?”
It was a non-bailable warrant. Nothing could be done till the next day. The police officer arrested Raju and took him away.
